About Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is located on the coast of West Africa, between Guinea and Liberia. Physically, it is about the size of South Carolina, but it is home to nearly twenty different ethnic groups. Although each group has its own language, the majority of the population speaks Temne and Mende - the languages of the two largest ethnic groups. Almost everyone also understands Krio, a lingua franca derived from a variety of tribal languages, Portuguese, and English.

The Krio word for Sierra Leone is "Salone."
